Overview
In 1903 the Alberta streetcar line spurred the growth of this then-suburban neighborhood. Over the next decade, as the population of Portland doubled, Alberta thrived and its business district would mirror those streetcar districts throughout the city. In the 1940s, as the automobile took over, redlining created a thriving multicultural neighborhood that would become known for art, jazz, great food, and a tight community. We’ll explore this now hip neighborhood, its ice cream, coffee, art, history, and find out what makes it so special. One hour, 1.25 miles (2 km).

Plaza by Frock Boutique -- 1439 NE Alberta St. We will meet in the mural / pedestrian plaza between the vegan restaurant and the boutique.
Itinerary
- 1Alberta Street
Throughout the length of eastern Alberta Street, we will explore the art, history and unique flare of the people here. It's known for art, jazz, great food and a tight community of business owners and residents.

The grocery is always the heart and soul of the neighborhood. We will learn about its long history as part of Portland's cooperative market community and check out the art here.
- 3Stop
Food carts are a big part of Portland's scene. We will learn about some of the great ones here and through the length of Alberta Street
- 4Alberta Studios
Alberta Street has been known for its locally made art for many decades. We will learn about some of the makers here and browse the window offerings.

The tall bike clowns of Alberta are only a few of the cyclists who have made a name for this area. We'll discuss their history as well as the bike community in Portland
