Overview
Þingvellir National Park tells the story of Iceland’s formation, both as a land and as a nation. On this self-guided walking tour, you’ll traverse the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates while discovering how this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site became the birthplace of Icelandic democracy.
Starting at the Öxarárfoss P3 parking trailhead, you’ll stroll through the magnificent Almannagjá gorge, where tectonic plates are shifting apart at a rate of a few centimeters per year. I’ll explain how this constantly evolving rift is linked to the powerful forces that continue to shape Iceland’s unique terrain.

We'll walk through a fantastic part of the Thingvellir National Park.
- 2Almannagja
We'll walk through this great part of the National Park.
- 3Oxararfoss
We pass the waterfall, and it is a natural place to stop and admire the waterfall and the surroundings.
- 4Thingvallakirkja church
The tour ends straight after the lovely church. The church is open some times, and then it is possible to take a look inside for free.
- 5Drekkingarhylur
We pass the waterfall with a nice view, but also dramatic history.
- 6Logberg (Law Rock)
The tour passes by the Law Rock.
- 7Thingvellir
The tour ends at the Prime minister's summer residence. It is not possible to enter the buildings.
