The crater was formed around 6,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. Over time, the volcanic cone collapsed, creating the caldera that we see today. What makes Kerið particularly captivating is the contrast between the deep azure-blue color of the lake within the crater and the red, iron-rich volcanic soil that forms the walls of the crater. During different times of the year, the water level in the lake can vary, creating a dynamic visual experience.
